Fourth Street Baptist Day Care started as a vision of Rev. Flakes in which for many years, he desired to have a complete child care development center, instead of a place to simply house and baby sit children.
When the church’s Christian Education Building was constructed in 1977, spaces for a day care center and nursery were finally included. The day care center was licensed and opened in 1992 with Sis. Robena Flakes serving as the director. Mrs. Flakes and her staff were honored as the State of Georgia’s first day care center to receive the Center of Distinction Award.
Fourth Street has a long-standing history of being committed to reinvesting in the community. One of the best examples in this effort is Fourth Towers, Inc., a subsidiary of the church designed to provide affordable housing for low to moderate income families.
Founded in 1972, the project was established to help restore the area surrounding the church following the move-out of many residents who formerly lived in the historic district. In 1994, the Towers received the status of Community Housing Development Organization (CHDO). Currently, the development provides housing for 26 families, creating a home environment for more than 100 people.
